Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on February 20, 1937. Her mother, Lillian Ryan worked as a household servant. Nancy Wilson was the first child of six. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's taste in music and the records that were played in her family home. As a young girl, she already had the impression of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. Church choirs encouraged her to develop this talent. When she was 15, she won an audition on television and was able to regularly appear on The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while at the time she was still in high school. In the same year, she started to work at night clubs. After graduating from high school the 17-year old Nancy took a class for a term at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University prior to going on to become an accomplished musician. In 1956, she recorded her debut record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 and 1958. Nancy recorded her first album on Dot Records during the time she spent with this group. Cannonball adderley encouraged her to go for a trip to New York in order to improve her career. She visited The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. In just a few months, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly signed her. A contract was formalized with Capitol Records in 1960. In 1960, she debuted with the song. Guess Who I Saw today Capitol Records came out with five Nancy Wilson albums over a two-year period. Adderley influenced her to move away from R&B to jazz and torch song. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration helped her reach the top. She had her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. In the following year, she was asked to perform at New York's Coconut Grove, the most famous nightclub in America.
