Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winner in jazz. Her birth date was February 20, 1937, in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson who was a worker at the ironworks as well as Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Her father's love of music as well as the music he played at home had a major influence on Nancy as a young girl. When she was young she had already developed the impression of who she was and what she wanted to do. The choir at church encouraged her to develop the talent. In her early teens when she was 15, she got a spot on a talent show on TV and started appearing regularly in The Skyline Melodies Tv Show while still in High School. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs around the same age. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After attending Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for one term, Nancy left to be professional performers. In 1956, she recorded her debut record in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 between 1956 and 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made while she was in the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball Adderley advised that she should move to New York to further her professional career. She moved to The Big Town to begin her career in 1959. The singer was brought in to sing for The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx and there was a place where Adderley's agent had heard her. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B to the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped propel her into the spotlight as well as her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963. Following that year, she received an invitation to perform at New York's Coconut Grove, the most sought-after night club in America.
