Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe. She was the daughter of Olden Wilson, an iron worker, and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the youngest among six children. Her father was a music lover and played records with his children at home. This was a major influence on her as a child. At just 4 year old, she was certain she would be a singer. She developed her talent by her involvement in the church choir. Following her win in a talent show on television when she was 15, she started to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in highschool. The same year, she began to work in nightclubs. When she graduated from high school, at the age of 17, Nancy took a class for a term at Ohio's Central State College now Central State University before going on to become professional as a singer. She made her first recording with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed between 1956 and 1958. Nancy began recording for Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she move to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959 she moved to The Big Town. Her agent heard her speak in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. within a month of her arrival to New York, she was in the city. It was a contract by Capitol Records in 1960. That year, she released her first single. Guess who saw today. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. The first was focused on R&B and then, with Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to prominence and she had her breakout song Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year, this led to her getting booked in the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
